Stichting Huygens-Fokker

The Huygens-Fokker Foundation, named after Christiaan Huygens and Adriaan Fokker, is a Dutch center for microtonal music.

Both Huygens and Fokker played an important role in the development of an alternative tone system with cleaner sounds of today's usual 12-tone equal-motion mood. Huygens calculated the 31-tone system, and based on this system, Fokker built a 31-tone organ in the 70's.

Foundation Huygens-Fokker aims to disseminate knowledge about all alternative toonsystems and the popularization of microtonal music in the broadest sense of the word. The foundation is housed in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. Their website contains a large collection of English and Dutch texts that explain the theory that relates to this subject. The organization maintains contacts worldwide with related organizations and research centers such as Tonalsoft, Kyle Gann, the Harry Partch Institute and the Logos Foundation in Ghent. She also works closely with a number of conservatories and universities where musicology is given.

In 2009, the 31-year Fokker organ moved from Haarlem to the BAM Hall in Muziektheater at 't IJ, fully revised and provided with MIDI connections. This instrument is free to view and regular pieces of music, specially written for this instrument, are performed in the Music Building.

Current Director is Sander Germanus.
