Cleomenes III of Sparta


Cleomenes III (Greek: Κλεομένης), from the house of the Agiades was from 235 to 219 BC. King of Sparta.

He was Leonidas II's son, married the widow of Agis IV and continued his social reforms. He broke the resistance of the eforen and managed to redistribute the land, owned by hundreds of landowners, and gave it to the citizens. He restored the old legislation of Lycurgus and reorganized the Spartan army with Macedonian armaments. In his attempt to bring the whole of Peloponnese again under Sparta rule, he collided with the Achaean Federation, of which leader Aratus of Sicyon had appealed to Antigonus III of Macedonia. In 222 BC. Cleomenes III had to dig down at Sellasia. He retired in Egypt, where he volunteered his life in 219.
