Jan Velaers


Jan Velaers (Tongeren, April 18, 1957) is a Belgian lawyer. He is a professor at the University of Antwerp, where he holds the subjects of 'state law; 2nd bachelor ',' thorough study rights and freedoms; master 'and' sources and principles of law; 1st Bachelor's degree. He is also an assessor at the Council of State.

He obtained a licentiate degree in law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1980 and in 1983 as a licentiate in philosophy. In 1988, he obtained his doctorate in law at the University of Antwerp. From 1980 to 1990 he worked as a lawyer at the counter in Tongeren. He became a professor at the University of Antwerp. From 1997 to 2003 he was dean of the Faculty of Law.

In 1991, he wrote "The Limitations of Freedom of Expression," which was awarded the Fernand Collin's biennial award. In 1994 he wrote together with Herman Van Goethem "Leopold III, The King, The Land, The War". The book was nominated in 1995 for the Golden Owl in the non-fiction category. In 1998, the work was awarded the three-yearly Price Hubert Pierlot for history.
