Carlos Arana Osorio

Carlos Manuel Arana Osorio (Barberena, July 17, 1918 - Chiquimula, December 6, 2003) was a Guatemalan politician and military. From 1970 to 1974 he was president of Guatemala.

Arana Osorio was from Santa Rosa Department. Arana Osorio joined the army and climbed to Colonel. He was known as the "Lion of the East" and was successful in reducing guerrillas in the east of the country.

In 1970, he was elected for the National Liberation Movement (MLN) and the Institutional Democratic Party (PID), the extremist army of the army, with a law and order program to President of Guatemala, although the electoral process is probably not entirely fair was expired. Arana Osorio became the first of a long series of military rulers. Immediately after his entry, he called out the state of emergency to elevate the campaign against the guerrillas. Arana Osorio's anti-war campaign was quite successful, although it was accompanied by cruelty and many innocent victims fell. The first death squads in Guatemala also emerged under his government. Because of the radicalization of opponents, most students, the battle moved from the countryside to the city. Journalists, opposition politicians and other critics of the regime were also prosecuted.

Arana was succeeded by MLN candidate Kjell Laugerud in 1974 after a fraudulent election. After his term as president, he served as an ambassador to Nicaragua. Arana died in 2003.
