Donia War

The Donia war was a violent conflict in the era of Frisian Freedom, in the years 1458-1464 when the party race between Schieringers and Vetkopers was at its peak. The conflict is known as a war because armed fights took place several times, causing a lot of cruelty, but it was especially a bloody family struggle between two main genera, the Harinxmas and their related donors. In this war it is not clear to direct a direct reason, because several fats were fought side by side, each of which had its own origin, beginners and participants, and was also terminated by a separate kiss. According to the Friesian chronicler Peter van Thabor, 224 were killed in the war, of which 213 were soldiers (servants) and 11 nobles (headings). Background

The conflict was between three main sections of the Harinxma family, respectively, from Heeg, Sneek and IJlst, which could be referred to as the Schieringse party. The opponents were seven cousins of them, from the Donia family, sons of Sierck Harinxma at the Doniahuis in Oosterend. These were also home to Schieringer but sought their allies at the 'Vetkoperse' divisions Gale Galama of Koudum, Jancko Douwema van Langweer and Doitse Albada of Jirnsum. The Donia war began in the Southwest corner of Westergo and extended from there to the Seven Forests.

The advent of hostilities in the Donia war should be sought in the fatigue of that time and the pursuit of local and regional hegemony by the various separate local rulers in the medieval Westerlauwers Friesland. The battle was fought with varying success. Then again one party was on the winning hand, then again the other party. A large number of stalks were fought, of which several possessors exchanged or were destroyed. In total, 20 stins are named by name where battle is delivered. In addition to the number of victims in the fighting, there were also many victims among the citizens. Also see
