Route description at Oud Zevenaar
The Klompenweg is a hiking trail that runs from Arnhem to Duisburg and is 141 km long.
The idea for this hiking trail originated because many Dutch chose the Sauerland as a holiday destination for walking. The Sauerländske Gebirgsverein (SGV) therefore decided to make a hiking link from the Netherlands to the Sauerland. As a name for the route, cliff path was chosen. The cliff road is one of the main roadways of the SGV.
The route was opened on May 8, 1984. Hereby it was expressed the wish that the cliff road will be traversed by many hikers, thereby contributing to the strengthening of the interconnection between the Netherlands and Germany. In September 2009, German and Dutch hikers in the city of Emmerik celebrated the 25th anniversary of this long-distance footpath.
The route consists of a series of existing hiking trails and is shown in important places with the image of a white cliff. The paths that make up the route are indicated by a painted white X (second cross) and a serial number.
The cliff path runs along the following places; Arnhem, Zevenaar, Emmerik, Rees, Wezel, Gladbeck, Bottrop, Oberhausen and Duisburg. It is made up of the following sections:
