Roy Fox (Denver, October 25, 1901 - London, March 20, 1982) was an American orchestral leader, especially in the United Kingdom.
biography Young yearsRoy Fox grew up in Hollywood. At the age of eleven he began playing corn. At the age of 13, he joined the Los Angeles Examiner's newsboys band. In short, he was allowed to play a signal horn for a studio of Cecil B. DeMille.
Fox's first major performance came when he became a member of Abe Lyman's orchestra at the Sunset Inn in Santa Monica at the age of 16. Here he played with Miff Mole, Gussie Miller, Henry Halstead and Gus Arnheim. He soon developed a fairly soft way of playing, which gave him the nickname "The Whispering Cornetist" (the whispering cornettist). Career
In 1920 Fox founded his own band, with which he recorded some songs in 1925. That same year he went up for the radio with Art Hickman's orchestra. After spending time in New York City, Fox and Arnheim returned to Hollywood to work at the Ambassador Hotel. Fox also engaged in movie soundtracks during this period.
In 1930, Fox received an invitation to appear in London. On September 29, 1930, he gave his first appearance here. He recorded music for the BBC that year. When his band returned to the United States last spring, Fox remained behind and collaborated with a new group for Decca Records.
In November 1931, Fox was affected by pleuritis and had to go to Switzerland for recovery in a sanatorium. This cost him his contract. When returning to England, Fox therefore established a new bond, almost entirely composed of new members. Only singer / trumpeter Sid Buckman already knew Fox from his previous band. With this band, Fox performed in Belgium and the Netherlands. Fox also worked on the movies On the Air and Big Ben Calling in 1933-34, made recordings for HMV Group, and went on tour through Europe in 1938. Then he was again affected by illness. Last years
Fox moved to cure Australia where he led the Jay Whidden Orchestra. He also visited the United States a few times for performances with small groups. In 1946 and 1947 he was the leader of a British orchestra. After 1952 he retired.
Fox died at the age of 80.
