Boids

Boids, developed by Craig Reynolds in 1986, is a simulation (computer) program about the swarming behavior of birds. An article about this was published in 1987.

As with many simulations in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Boids is an example of emerging behavior. This means that the complexity of the whole arises from the interaction of individual actors (in this case: boid actors, the boids), following a number of simple rules.

In a simple variant, Boids excludes the following rules for choosing the direction by each of the moving boid actors:

Other rules may be added, such as:

The simulation shows that such simple rules can already provide an elementary picture of biological phenomena such as a swarm of birds or a school fish. That's why Boyds is widely used for animation in the movie or just as fun moving image on a screen saver.

The operation of Boyds is comparable to that of cellular automation.
