The first championship was held in 1894, just one year later than the British Amateur for Women. Golf was mostly a men's sport and only 17 ladies participated; 36 holes strokeplay was played. From 1906 the tournament was combined with the Ladies Australian Open. From 1928, the weather was a separate tournament, with a 36-hole stroke play for 8 places. In 1935, for the first time, all states participated, the number of participants was 91 and the matchplay section was extended to 16 places and in 1958 to 32 places. This formula is still being used.
