Dirk van Krevelen

Dirk Willem van Krevelen (1914-2001) was a Dutch chemist who designed a number of methods and techniques used in chemistry. Lifecycle

Van Krevelen studied chemistry at Leiden in the 30's. He graduated from the TH in Delft at H.I. Aquarius in 1939. A year later, he became Director of Research at the State Mine (now DSM). In 1959 he moved to the General Arts Union, for eleven years as Head of Research and Development, and as such also a member of the Executive Board. From 1952 he was also part-time professor in chemical technology in Delft; 22 times he worked as a promoter.

He wrote three standard works: Coal Science. Aspects of coal constitution (together with J. Schuyer, 1957), Coal. Typology, Chemistry, Physics, Constitution (1961, last reprinted in 1993) and Properties of Polymers. Correlations with chemical structure (1972, last reprinted in 1997). Van Krevelen was Vice-Chairman of the Hoogewerff-Fund from 1963 to 1982 and since 1991 a member of the KNCV.

A street was named at the Chemelot site in Geleen. Techniques mentioned in Van Krevelen

In the chemical science, Van Krevelendiagram, also called Van Krevelen-Hoftijzerdiagram, is the name of a chemical gas absorption scheme. In the earth sciences, Van Krevelen refers to the standard work Coal on the composition of coal and their appearance. In the physical chemistry, the Van Krevelen method refers to an estimation method in the hydrocarbon chemistry, either the Van Krevelen-Chermin System for Estimation of the Free Energy of Formation of Organic Compounds; It is a way to estimate unknown thermodynamic quantities from the structural formula without the need for experiments.

In the aroma chemistry, the Mars-Van Krevelen Mechanism describes a redox mechanism that describes the mode of catalyst-supported oxidation of aromatics. Finally, in the polymer chemistry, the Van Krevelen method describes a description method for polymerized hydrocarbons in which the physical properties of the polymer can be estimated.
