Grendels mother

Grendels mother in an attempt to kill Beowulf

Grendel's mother (Oudengels, Grendles modor) is one of the three opponents (together with Grendel and the Dragon) of hero Beowulf from the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, part of the Nowell Codex.

The old codex does not mention a name, but is referred to only to Grendel's mother. Over the characteristics and presence in the mother's text, many scholars have been bowing over this point for years. Her place of residence in the story or where she is hiding is a lake or lake situated in a cave, where her son Grendel is also hiding. It is therefore thought that she was a seaworthy creature while her son was a farmer. In the rules of the texts 106 to 114 and 1260 to 1267 from Beowulf, Grendel and his mother are described as descendants of the Biblical Cain.

After Grendel died of his injury, Grendel's mother leaves the cave to take revenge and kills everyone in the hall of Heorot, after which she returns to her cave. Beowulf chases her to her shelter, she feels his presence and takes him into her cave. There follows a fight and Grendels mother almost knows Beowulf, but Beowulf can just grab a sword and beat her. Then he sees Grendel's body and decapitates it; together with the head he returns to King Hroðgar (at the ninth hour), after which he is overloaded with gold.
