The phosphotransferase system is a complex group translocation system present in some bacteria, where it drives the inside of the cell of some sugars such as glucose, mannose and mannitol. The first step of the reaction is the phosphorylation of the substrate by a phosphotransferase. In the case of glucose, the reaction forms glucose-6-phosphate which, because of the negative charge brought by the phosphate group, is no longer able to cross the cell membrane. The phosphorylation of glucose-glucose-6-phosphate is also the first reaction of glycolysis.
