Battle at Fort Cedars

Map of the battlefield

The Battle of Fort Cedars was a battle during the American War of Independence, which took place from 15 to 26 May 1776 in Fort Cedars, 28 miles (45 km) west of Montreal (Canada). It was a screen shot that led to the American garrison being caught without any fight.

During the American invasion in Canada (1775), American patriots, under the direction of General Moses Hazen, had taken a short time in Montreal. Delivered to the British activities in the West, Hazen sent 400 men under the command of Colonel Timothy Bedel to take Fort Cedar.

On May 15, 1776, Bedel learned that 150 British and 50 Irokees were in march. He handed his order to Major Isaac Butterfield and returned to Montreal for reinforcement. Upon arrival, Hazen sent 100 men under the command of Major Henry Sherburne back to Fort Cedars. On May 16, the British surrounded the fort and Butterfield passed over without a fight. The British promised to protect US prisoners from reprisals of the Iraqis. On May 20, Sherburne landed in Quinze-Chênes about 10 miles (15 km) from Cedars. Because he did not realize that Butterfield had surrendered, he led his troops into a British ambush. They fought about 40 minutes before they were obliged to surrender. This fight is known as the battle at Vaudreuil.
