François Anthony of Rayneval

François Anthony de Rayneval (Raineval - Paramaribo, 1726), commander and governor of Suriname.

The Rayneval (or Raineval) is an old French family, from the Picardy region of France. The Rayneval was already a lieutenant in Suriname during the assassination of Van Sommeldijck in 1688 and was co-responsible for the conquest of the riot and imprisonment of the masters. In 1698 he became a commander, a function that he fulfilled continuously until 1725. In 1712, he defended Suriname in vain against the French ships and 3000 soldiers led by Jacques Cassard.

In 1702 he married Anna Elizabeth Glimmer, the daughter of the then council-tax. The couple got 7 children: Governor ad interim

He was four times governor at interim. The first time for 2 1/2 years, after the death of Governor De Gruyter in 1707. The second time was for six months after the death of Governor De Goyer. The third time took place for five months after the death of Governor De Mahony in 1717. The fourth time was for six months after the death of Governor Coutier in 1721. Plantation owner

In 1702, Rayneval obtained the concession for the Schoonoord plantation. At the same time he also planted the plantation Lustrijk. This plantation was opposite Schoonoord. In addition, he owned the plantations Picardy at Commewijne and Ponthieu at the Warappakreek. Both names reminded him of his birthplace. Also the plantations of Constantia at the Matapicakreek and Virgin Islands on the Suriname River were in its possession.

After her husband's death, Anna Elisabeth Glimmer eventually left the Netherlands, and in 1735 she bought the outskirts Schoonoord in Warmond, where she lived until her death in 1750. The house was named after the same plantation Schoonoord.
