Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich

The Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich is a Swiss symphony orchestra founded in 1868. The orchestra thanks its name to the concert hall, the Tonhalle in Zurich, where it has been in 1895. History

In the history of the orchestra, the long-term commitments of the chief conductors are discussed. Friedrich Hegar, the first conductor, works from 1868 to 1906 with the orchestra, a period of 38 years. His successor Volkmar Andreae remained 43 years old (1906-1949). The Tonhalle Orchestra only gained international recognition only slowly. However, there have been many well-known composers and conductors for the orchestra through the years, starting with Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner. Franz Lehár made recordings in 1947 with the orchestra recently released on CD. Just under current conductor David Zinman, the orchestra grew clearly in quality and fame, partly because of his recordings of all symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven and Robert Schumann and of Richard Strauss's works.
