Grenville-orogenese

the location of the Grenville orogenese The Grenville-orogenese (English: Grenville orogeny or Grenvillian (orogeny), which can also be translated as Grenvillien or Grenvillian) was a phase of mountain formation between about 1300 and 1000 million years ago, during Mesoproterozoic. This phase of mountain formation is recognized in ancient, Proterozoic cratons of North America, in a band of present Mexico to eastern Canada and Greenland.

The Grenville orogenesis occurred approximately simultaneously with the Dalslandic orogenese found in northern Europe. It is possible that the eastern European kraton at the end of the Mesoproterozoic in such a way opposes the cratons of North America that both orogeneses formed a contiguous rocking belt. The Dalslandic belt was in this case an eastern branch of the Grenvillegordel. However, the extent to which the two orogenes are related is not clear, especially because the exact relative position of the kratons is not well known. What is quite clear is that at the end of these phases of mountain formation all kratons were united in a so-called supercontinent called Rodinia.
