Viadeyra

The viadeyra, viadera, or viandela was a lyrical genre of Occitan and Catalan literature, invented by Trovatori, a dance song devised to lighten the burden of a long journey or to revive it, a popular form opposed to a high, seldom used by the poets who were educated. According to Catalan Cançoneret de Ripoll, it was pus jusana spècies qui and en los cantàs (the kind of humorous song that exists) and elsewhere it is called the baixa espècie de cançons (the kind of the lowest song).

One of the most famous viadeyras was Cerverí de Girona. The initial verse is No.1 prenatz fals marit ("Do not take that fake husband") and is preserved in Cançoner Gil. The theme of the song is a warning to a girl, Jana delgada (thin Joanna) or Na Delgada, a senhal (leader) that means "thin lady". The jana delgada verse (read as Jana delgada or ja, Na Delgada) is repeated after every two verses as a respos. The song has a lot in common with cantigas de amigo galician-portuguese.
