Death Penalty in Tonga

The death penalty in Tonga is scheduled for some offenses, but it is not enforced since the 1980s. Amnesty International actually puts Tonga among the abolitionist countries.

Tonga adopts hanging as a method of execution. The latest execution dates back to September 7, 1982, when three men, Flatoti Sole, Livingi Sole and Fili Esau, were hanged after committing a murder in the village of Vaini.

The government considered it abolished by practice, but decided to reinstate it.

In 2008, Tonga voted against the Universal Death Penalty at the United Nations General Assembly. Notemodify wikitesto Links externalize the wikitesto
