Johan van der Bruggen


Johan van der Bruggen (29 August 1916 - January 17, 2001) was a Dutch pioneer in the budo. Van der Bruggen introduced Judo and Kendo in The Netherlands.

In the Netherlands, Van der Bruggen received a class of Japanese Taiji Nakada in jiujitsu, judo and kendo. In the Netherlands he started a school in Rotterdam in 1937. A few years later, the school was destroyed during the bombing in Rotterdam, after which he was accommodated at Maurice van Nieuwenhuizen and gave lessons. During the occupation years, Van der Bruggen in The Hague Zoutmanstraat founded the Dojo Nakada where jiujitsu, Judo and Kendo were taught. His famous students included Gerhard Schutte. Van der Bruggen was, among other things, trainer of country coaches and valued as hanshi (grandmaster) with the 9th time. Until age he gave classes.

A street to Johan van der Bruggen was named in The Hague in 2010.
