Kingdom of Mide

The kingdom of Mide existed as such until at least early in Ireland's historic age. Its name means the middle, denoting it as it was located right in the middle of the island, which included the counties of Meath Westmeath and parts of Cavan, Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth and Offaly.

According to tradition it was created around the fifth century by Tuathal Teachtmhar. His first sovereigns would be the Uí Enechglaiss, who - along with Uí Failge and Uí Bairrche - would belong to the Érainn / Fir Bolg. One of these racial divisions, the Fir Domnann, is listed on the map of Ireland by Claudio Tolomeo as Domnainn with capital in Rheba.

At the end of 490 they were driven out of their original land in Kildare and beyond the Wicklow Mountains by Uí Néill, whose clan, the Cholmáin, took its place. The Uí Enechglaiss were around Arklow, whose reigning dynasty took O'Feary's name later.

In medieval Ireland, the kings of Mide belonged to the clan of Cholmáin, a part of Uí Néill. Many of them were supreme king of Ireland. After the collapse of the kingdom in the twelfth century its dynasty, the Ua Mael Sechlainn or O Melaghlins, were forced to go west and settle on the eastern shore of the Shannon River.
