Recover Records

78-Turner by Vernon Dalhart on Herwin Records

Herwin Records was an American record label from the 1920s, on which jazz and blues records originated. The Herwin Record Company was founded in St. Louis by the brothers Herbert and Edwin Schiele-the name of the label was derived from their first names. The label released records since 1924, most of the recordings were leased from Gennett Records and Paramount Records. Some musicians: Blind Willie Jackson and Brother, Charley Peters, Blind Tim Russell and Blind Jeremiah Taylor. In 1930, the label was sold to Wisconsin Chair Company, Paramount's parent company, which labeled the label in 1930.

In the sixties and seventies, the label was revived by record collector Bernard Klatzko. He used the label first to publish old Library of Congress recordings and homemade new recordings of rediscovered blues musicians (such as Bukka White, Son House and Skip James). From 1971, he recovers historical jazz, blues and ragtime songs (including Freddie Keppard, King Oliver, Punch Miller, Johnny Dodds, Bessie Johnson and Blind Joe Taggert).
