Zingzeggen

Zingzeggen is the spoken language of a song text, with the melody line usually played by a melody instrument (eg piano). Sporadically, the melody line can be sung.

'Zingzeggen' tries to approach the natural language as much as possible. In this case, singing of the rap differs, the text speaks rhythmically, and the recital, which is sung more and whose melody line is sung. More similarities are with the melodrama (accompanying music in a spoken text). The difference is that in song-based songs the melody line can be extracted, either by sung parts or by played melody. Melodrama lacks a melody line.

In the early days of the cabaret (in the Netherlands since 1895) singing voices occurred frequently. Within the cabaret, more than any other song art forms have always sought to approach the language of speech as close as possible. Cabaretiers (including Eduard Jacobs, Jean-Louis Pisuisse and Louis Davids) went very freely with the melody and portions were parlanded. In the thirties, singing sings became more in vain (Fien de la Mar is an important name here) and the music line was increasingly taken over by musical instruments. From the fifties, the singing stamped out of fashion, although cabaretists like Wim Kan and Seth Gaaikema continued to use this way of performing.
