Gibus

Gibus

The gibus (also known as chapeau claque) is a cylinder hat invented by the homonymous Antoine Gibus in France in 1823.

This type of hat contains very thin steel springs that allow it to get in shape with stretched straps after being compressed vertically. This allows the wearer to flatten his cylinder, and to carry it under his arm or put it in minimal environments.

The chapeau claque nickname derives from the noise produced by the springs release. Gibus Hat Container

The gibus is cited by Julia Barnes in the book "Flaubert's Parrot" as a curiosity about the strange behavior of Madame Bovary's author who brought a gibus to Egypt to visit the Pyramids. Episode confirmed by Flaubert's letters.
