Posad (Russian: посад) is a Russian word that defines a settlement, often surrounded by walls and moats, built adjacent to a town or cremation or monastery in the X-XV century. Usually it was inhabited by craftsmen and merchants, said posadskije ljudi (ljudi del posad).

At the time of the Russian Empire, the word meant a semi-urban settlement.

Some people became in the city time. Those born near a cremation often created local toponyms such as Nagornij Posad and Kazanskij Posad for Kazan's historic center. From those close to monasteries were born cities that took the name from the monastery, such as Sergiev Posad, named after the nearby Troice-Sergieva Lavra. Voices correlateemodify wikitesto
