Fu Chai

Fu Chai was king of state Wu from 495 - 473 BC. in China during Spring and Autumn Period.

In 486 BC. Fu Chai put the Han Canal from Jiangdu to Huai'an in the current Jiangsu province. As a consequence, the Huai River and the Changjiang were connected. Later he made a deeper canal between the Yishui and Jishui rivers, which led to the withdrawal of water to the Huaihe and the Huanghe.

Attacks of the neighboring state of Yue had led to the death of his father He Lü. Fu Chai succeeded in submitting Yue. However, Prince Goujian of Yue attacked Fu Chai in the north for a conference at Huangchi, the present Fengqiu in Henan with the rulers of the other states. Goujian conquered in 473 BC. the capital of Wu, Suzhou. This led to an end to the state of Wu and the rule of Fu Chai.
