Robert Colescott


Robert H. Colescott (Oakland, August 26, 1925 - Tucson, June 4, 2009) was an American painter.

Colescott studied at Fernand Léger in Paris. He was the first African-American artist to represent the United States at a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale (in 1997). His work is part of several important collections, such as the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the "Baltimore Museum of Art". Characteristic were his satirical style, often with excessive, comical or bitter reflections about his African-American descent. Also see
