Salvation Mountain

Salvation Mountain

Salvation Mountain is a country art work created by Leonard Knight. It is near the American city of Calipatria (California). It is a painted hill with texts that are intended to convert people into Christianity. On the top is a cross that can be reached by climbing a yellow staircase, climbing the Yellow Brick Road, cut into the hill. The mountain is partly built with structures of adobe and straw. As a result, a number of covered spaces have been created.

Leonard Knight has ever come to this place to do some work for a week. Eventually it became a project he worked for 25 years. The building is also located on the territory of the state and is landscaped without permission. In the past, the Imperial County administration indicated that it wanted to remove the paint from the mountain as this could be bad for the environment. After many assertions to Leonard Knight, this plan has disappeared.

In 2011 Leonard Knight was placed in a nursing home because he suffered from dementia. The mountain is now being maintained by volunteers. Knight died on February 10, 2014 at the age of 82.

In the 2007 movie Into the Wild, the main character is led by Leonard Knight on Salvation Mountain.
