Heinz van Haaren (1968)
Heinz van Haaren (Marl, June 3, 1940) is a Dutch former football player who played as a midfielder.
Van Haaren started his youth career at VfL Drewer and SpVg Marl. From 1960 he played in the Oberliga West at TSV Marl-Hüls. From 1964 to 1968 he played for MSV Duisburg. After that he went to Schalke '04 with which he won the DFB Cup and scored twice in the championship. He finished his career in the 1972/73 season in France at RC Strasbourg.
In 1971 Van Haaren was one of the twelve Schalke players punished in the Bundesliga scandal where Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and Arminia Bielefeld tried to escape degradation through contest manipulation. The match of Schalke - Bielefeld on April 7, 1971 with a score of 0-1 was the reason for his one-year suspension.
Van Haaren returned to Germany in 1974 and became a trainer in the amateur football and in the youth at Schalke. Although he never lived in the Netherlands, he had Dutch nationality. His Dutch grandparents were living in Germany and Dutch nationality remained a family tradition.
