Arturo Lona Reyes


Arturo Lona Reyes (Aguascalientes, November 1, 1925) is a Mexican Roman Catholic spiritual. He was a bishop of Tehuantepec for many years and was known as a supporter of liberation theology.

Lona Reyes was prized in 1952. He became a vicar in Huejutla and was appointed in 1971 as a bishop of Tehuantepec, in the state of Oaxaca. Lona Reyes was known as a fiery supporter of the Second Vatican Council and advocated a church dedicated to the people.

He was as popular as controversial. Lona Reyes was known as a follower of the Istmus Labor, Labor and Student Coalition (COCEI) who replaced Juchitán against the authoritarian character of both federal and local authorities. By opponents he was accused of marxist, and was alleged to support guerrilla movements and involved in arms smuggling, allegations never proven to be. In 1995, he survived an attack on his life.

In 1998, he was asked by the church authorities, officially due to his age, but according to Lona Reyes because of his support for liberation theology, after which he went out to Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Jeronimo Prigione, and never deceived have received in his protection of the poor and oppressed.
