Anglo-Sovjetverdrag

Molotov and Churchill in London at signature

The Anglo-Soviet Treaty was an alliance treaty between the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union, signed in London on May 26, 1942, between the British Secretary of State Anthony Eden and the Soviet Foreign Minister Vjatsjeslav Molotov. The treaty entered into a military and political alliance between both countries for 20 years; during World War II and in the years after. The full name of the treaty was Twenty-Year Mutual Assistance Convention between the United Kingdom and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The treaty constituted a follow-up to the Anglo-Soviet Convention of 12 July 1941, in which both countries promised to support each other with military support and not to conclude a peace treaty with Nazi Germany itself. The Anglo-Soviet Treaty also focused on military cooperation, but was complemented by other forms of cooperation and mutual assistance during and after the war. The convention remained valid for 20 years, but was terminated by the Soviet Union in May 1955 after the United Kingdom joined NATO. Also see Externe link
