Hungarian parliamentary elections 1990


Elections in Hungary 1990. For the first time since 1945 democratic (parliamentary) elections were held in Hungary for the Hungarian parliament on 25 March and 8 April 1990.

The first round of parliamentary elections took place on 25 March 1990. The two main participating parties, the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF) and the Alliance of Free Democrats (SZDSZ) achieved approximately equal votes. During the second election round, the liberal SZDSZ suffered a major election defeat and the Christian Democratic / Conservative MDF achieved the big victory. The MDF achieved 42% of the votes, accounting for 164 of the 286 eligible seats. The SzDSz achieved 23% of the votes, accounting for 93 seats. The Social Democratic Hungarian Socialist Party (former communists) achieved only 33 seats.

As a result of this outcome, József Antal of the MDF formed a coalition government in which besides his own MDF, the FKgP and the KDNP also formed part. In April 1990, Árpád Göncz of the SZDSZ, for the time being, presided over President and President-in-Office of Parliament. On August 3, 1990, Göncz was elected president. Also see
