The term bric-à-brac (French origin) was used for the first time in Victorian era.

Subsequently, it referred to collectibles like elaborately decorated tea cups and small vases, feathers, wax flowers under glass domes, egg shells, statues, painted miniatures or photographs, and so on. The bric-a-brac was used as an ornament on shelves of fireplaces, tables, shelves, or exhibited in collector cabinets. Sometimes these lockers had glass doors to show the articles inside by protecting them from dust.
