Orazio Della Rena was the son of Fulvio di Giuliano and Aspasia (the firstborn daughter of Aonio Paleario, a humanist who had stayed long in Colle Val d'Elsa and known for spreading Lutheran ideas). He perfected his studies in Pisa and, having completed the studies, thanks to the influence of Pietro Usimbardi, bishop of Arezzo and a member of the influential Usimbardi family, became part of the Grand Ducal Secretariat.

In 1590 he became secretary of Grand Ducal Ambassadors in Spain, Lenzoni, Guicciardini, Concino and Tarugi, who held office until 1604.

At this time he was the author of various works: "Report of the State of Ferrara" (1589), "Report of gold and silver that carried the fleet from Peru and New Spain" (1594), "Compendium of Philip's Life Second King of Spain "(1600)," Description of America or True West Indies "(1604) and the Lost" Portrait of King Philip III and Queen Margherita his wife, Duke of Lerma and all other state advisers ".

From 1607 to 1611 he worked in Rome as secretary, first for Guicciardini and later Niccolini. He was Jurisconsult in the Florentine College and in 1613 he was appointed first secretary for the affairs of Siena, then of the possessions and, subsequently, secretary to the wife of Cosimo II, Maria Maddalena of Austria. He was a member of the Council of the Thirteenth Century in 1621 and the following year he was awarded the Sienese citizenship by the College of Balia.
