Carroll Shelby, a Texas ex-pilot who had many successes in Europe in the 1950s running for Allard, Maserati and Aston Martin (with the latter having won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959 with Roy Salvadori), had a heated discussion with Enzo Ferrari when he was summoned to Maranello to discuss a possible engagement. The Americans did not like the dictatorial methods of the Modena and the terms of the agreement, so he went and slammed the door. Years later, when in May 1963, Ford decided to counter Ferrari in competitions following the failure to acquire the Modena company, Shelby allied with Detroit's giant to get his personal revenge against Enzo Ferrari.
