Washington Circle

Equestrian statue of Washington in Washington Circle

Washington Circle is a roundabout and square in downtown Washington D.C. It is located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue, New Hampshire Avenue, K Street and the 23rd Street. The traffic of K Street (which is part of Highway 29) continues through a tunnel under the roundabout.

The George Washington University campus in Foggy Bottom borders the square. The nearest subway station is Foggy Bottom-GWU.

Washington Circle, built in 1856, is the oldest roundabout of the city. In the center of the roundabout is a rider statue of George Washington during the Battle of Trenton, made by sculptor Clark Mills and unveiled on February 22, 1860. The image was made in accordance with a resolution of the Continental Congress adopted in August 1783. The resolution says "that a rider statue of General Washington should be set up at the place where Congress will be housed." The total cost of the monument was $ 60,000.

The National Park Service currently maintains Washington Circle Park, the public space surrounding the George Washington equestrian statue.
