Barawertornis is an extinct non-flying bird from Australia. This animal belongs to the family of Dromornithidae (Thunderbirds) from the order of the ducklings. There is one species, B. tedfordi.
Barawertornis is the smallest thunderbird in the format of a contemporary casualty. This species was one and a half feet tall and about 80 to 90 kg heavy. Barawertornis fossils were found in Riversleigh in Queensland and date from Late Oligocene to Early Mioceen. At that time this area was covered with rainforests. Several fossils have been found in the vicinity of aquatic animals such as lungfish, turtles and crocodiles, suggesting that Barawertornis spent some of the time in and around the water.
