Geoffrey Charles Ryman (born in 1951) is a Canadian science fiction and fantasy writer.
Ryman's mother was a journalist, through her his first story was published in the local newspaper when he was eight years old. His father was a scientist and fascinated him with stories about lasers. Also the artistry has passed from father to son. In 1963 the family moved to Los Angeles. He wanted to become an actor and only after moving to London in the 1970s he became a serious writer.
With the novel The Unconquered Country (1986), he established his name and won the British Science Fiction Award and the World Fantasy Award. The novel The Child Garden (1989) confirmed his talent and delivered Ryman the Arthur C. Clarke Award. With Was (1992) he devised The Wizard of Oz and Judy Garland's life again.
