Formation of lillo

The formation of Lillo is a geological formation in northern Belgium. The formation consists predominantly of marine shells and sand from Plioceen (Zanclien to Piacenzien).

The formation of Lillo is mainly found in the Kempen and around Antwerp. The type location is at the canal dock in the port of Antwerp.

The formation of Lillo can be up to 25 meters thick. More shells are found at the base than at the top, which is also clay. The formation is divided into five members that can occur both above and beyond:

Usually the formation on top of older Pliocene deposits of the formation of Kattendijk. Above the formation can be the quaternary deposits of the formations of Merksplas and Brasschaat. To the south, the formation is in the formation of Powderlee, which is of equal age. In the north, in the Netherlands, the formation becomes thicker, however, it is seen as the upper part of the formation of Oosterhout.
