Locomotieftype Planet Replica of the Planet in the Manchester Science Museum
The Planet was an early steam locomotive A1 (0-2-2 according to Whyte notation), built in 1830 for the newly opened Liverpool and Manchester Railway by Robert Stephenson and Company. It was the ninth locomotive for the L & MR. After the Rocket, this was Stephenson's next major design. It was the first locomotive that used internal cylinders. Improvements
The Planet Locomotives already featured a lot of future types of steam locomotives. This makes the Planet look very different from the Rocket, although it was designed just a year earlier. Stephenson's Northumbrian represents an intermediate step in this evolution of the steam locomotive.
