Zap Mom

Marie Daulne

The Zap Mama group was founded in 1990 by Marie Daulne, a Belgian of Congolese origin. Their music is a mix of soul, gospel and African-Cuban rhythms. They played on the soundtrack of the American film Mission: Impossible II. They sing in French and English. History

Daulne was born in the former Zaire from a Belgian father and a black mother. Her musical creations arise from this dual background. In 1990, Daulne gathered five young singers for a singing group called Zap Mama. Their first cd, a capella sang and called Zap Mama, appeared a year later. Their tour, from Berlin to New York and Sydney, got a lot of attention.

In 1994, a second CD called "Sabsylma" was called a mix of Indian, Moroccan and Australian music. After a two-year trip, Marie Daulne returned to Brussels with a next album in her head, "Seven". New musicians joined the group and the songs were provided with even more unusual sounds.

In the fall of 1998, the group left for a tour of Africa. It provided inspiration for the fourth album of Zap Mama, "A Ma Zone", which was released in 2000. Daulne had settled in the United States, but in 2004 she returned to Brussels. In the United States, Daulne became friends with Erykah Badu, who recorded the single "Bandy Bandy", which appeared on the album "Ancestry in Progress" in 2004. This album was released by Lucky Bop, the record label of David Byrne. On this album, Marie Daulne worked together with, among others, uestlove (from The Roots), hip hop performer Common and beatboxer Scratch. The music was especially influenced by hip hop and r & b.

In 2005, Daulne, together with Monza, took up the theme song for the 175th anniversary of Belgium, I Love You / Je T'aime Tu Sais. In 2007, Zap Mama Supermoon's album featured a mix of world, pop, jazz and soul. Marie Daulne is accompanied by drummer Tony Allen, Will Lee bassist Michael Franti of Spearhead, guitarist David Gilmore and pianist Daniel Freiberg.

In 2008 and 2009, Zap Mama was once again internationally interested. In the movie and accompanying CD What About Me? of 1 Giant Leap, they work with the number Each Step Moves Us On, a collaboration with Speech. 1 Giant Leap was a multimedia project by Jamie Catto (Faithless) and Duncan Bridgeman.
