Wallen of Retranchement

valleys of retranchement

The Retranchement Walls form a cultural-historical monument and nature reserve surrounding Retranchement village.

The ramparts were constructed in 1604 on behalf of Prince Maurits and were part of the Spanish Government Line. They protected the Swine, but in 1682 some of the reinforcement disappeared in the waves.

The Wallen now forms a 27 ha nature reserve, owned by the Zeelandse Landschap Foundation. It is a small area where many knot trees, hawthorn hills, ponds and dikes can be found. This allows for varied plant growth. In 1999, 293 species of higher plants were found. Especially the locations of the rare clovers: small caterpillar, raw clover, striped clover and subterranean clover are unique. The stone owl also grows, while the ramparts form a habitat for the tree frog.

The area is accessible, as hiking trails were built.
