Bakkerskil

The Bakkerskil is a creek in the Brabant Biesbosch.

The creek starts at the village of Werkendam and then flows along the village of Nieuwendijk, eventually pouring into a mouthwash in the open water of the Biesbosch.

In the past, the Bakkerskil was a wide tide and was connected upstream with the Merwede River, and downstream with the open water of the Biesbosch. In 1815 the Papsluis was built as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterline for the inundation of the Uppelse polder. Later, the part of the Biesbosch in the vicinity of the Bakkerskil (the so-called Oostwaard) is completely embedded, causing the creek to lose its open connection to the outside water on both sides. Today, only a relatively wide, although locally part of the world, remains a resource of this ever powerful stream.

The Bakkerskil today performs an important drainage function for the surrounding polder land of the Oostwaard (together with the Bleeke Kil or Oostkil and the Bruil Kil).

There is also a Bakkerskil near Krimpen aan de Lek. The creek is connected to the New Meuse.
