Fort St. Jan (Stekene)

Restant Walgracht Fort St. Jan

Fort Saint-Jan was a fort at Trompwal ('The Wal') between Kemzeke and Kapellebrug in the territory of the municipality of Stekene. The fort was part of the Spanish Government Line. History

The fort of Saint John was built in the wake of developments during the early years of the 1980s, when Ghent and Antwerp joined the Union of Utrecht in 1579. In 1583, the states also crossed the dikes at Saaftinge. In response, Parma raised fortresses and built a bridge over the Scheldt in order to prevent Antwerp's supply. From the Fort of Sint Jan the Parmavaart was dug into the flooded area. Thus, it was ensured of shipping connections to Ghent and Hulst.

In the early 18th century, the renewed fortress was one of the Bedmarlinie's support points. Present day

Today, only this recognizable form is found in the walled wall and the canal. The Stroperstraat (N403) crosses the former fort of Saint-Jan. External source 51° 14′ 12″ NB, 4° 3′ 36″ OL
