Róbert Ilosfalvy

Róbert Ilosfalvy (Hódmezővásárhely (Budapest), June 18, 1927 - Budapest, January 6, 2009) was a Hungarian opera singer.

As a tenor, he had a voice of lyric grace and dramatic power, allowing him to purchase a wide range of Italian, German and French repertoire roles. He started his career as a cantor in a synagogue and then studied at Budapest's music academy. After winning a first prize in 1953 in a singing match in Bucharest, he started singing there for the opera. He returned to Hungary and sang at Budapest Opera, with guest performances in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and Russia.

In 1964, he continued his career in West Germany and performed in Stuttgart, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich, with guest performances in Munt in Brussels, the Royal Opera House in London, the San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Ilosfalvy was especially asked for Italian lyrical roles such as the Duke of Mantua, Alfredo, Rodolfo, Pinkerton, but could also play dramatically dramatic roles like Manrico, Alvaro, Cavaradossi and Dick Johnson. He also received applause as Walther Stolzing and Don José. He is probably the best known of his recording of Roberto Devereux, with Beverly Sills, from 1969.
