Gerrit Abraham van Engelen

Gerrit Abraham van Engelen (Zalk, February 24, 1891 - IJsselmuiden, July 15, 1982), commonly referred to as "Gait Abram", was a Dutch politician for the SGP.

Gerrit Abraham van Engelen was a son of Hermanus van Engelen (farmer) and Jakobje van de Beld. In September 1931, Van Engelen became councilor and later elder and local mayor of the municipality of IJsselmuiden. When in May 1943 Mayor Mr. Ms. Maurits Louis Quarles of Ufford received childhood paralysis and died 4 months later, Van Engelen took charge of duties. In September 1944 Van Engelen withdrew with some of the secretary staff and obscured the keys of the municipal safe, which contained the necessary sensitive material. As a reprisal measure, the occupiers stalled his house on the Nieuweweg 76 in IJsselmuiden on September 29, 1944. After the liberation, Van Engelen was appointed acting mayor to be officially appointed Mayor of IJsselmuiden on February 26, 1946. He stayed this until his retirement on March 1, 1956.

Of Angels married Aaltje Holtland on 21 November 1912 in IJsselmuiden. They had three children. In 1957 the name of the Nieuweweg in IJsselmuiden was changed to the Mayor of Engelenweg. Angels became 91 years old. He is buried at the cemetery "De Zandberg" in IJsselmuiden.
