Joseph Pauwels (painter)

Joseph Pauwels (Sleidinge, December 16, 1818 - Ghent, March 12, 1876) was a painter, especially known for his religious scenes, but also by his genre scenes and portraits. Transcending (1847)

He studied at the Ghent Academy, under the auspices of the Dutch-Dutch painter Pierre Van Hanselaere. He then joined the Academy of Antwerp at the romantic painter Gustaaf Wappers.

He started with portraits and genre scenes. But after an internship in France (1853) in partnership with his friend Xavier De Cock, he was almost exclusively involved in religious murals. Of these, many examples can be found in churches in Ghent, Evergem, Sleidinge, Wetteren and Zelzate.

The Ghent Museum of Fine Arts has four paintings of him. The House of Alijn (Ghent) has a menu of the banquet for Joseph Pauwels from his colleagues and friends on April 27, 1873. Sources
