Monument on the Afsluitdijk

Bronze Emboss of Hildo Krop: Three Stone Setters

The Vlietermonument is located at the Vlieter, the place where the Afsluitdijk was closed in 1932. It is a monument in the form of a lookout tower designed by architect Willem Dudok. The tower was built in 1933.

There is a footbridge over the highway and on both sides a parking lot (Care Place Monument).

In his design for the tower, Dudok went out of the protective function of the Afsluitdijk against the North Sea. The visitors go through a wide open staircase to the balcony of the tower. From below a wide crossed roof, the visitor sees the IJsselmeer in full width. Then he enters the spiral staircase in the stairwell. The IJsselmeer remains well visible. On the side of the stairwell are high window frames. On the side of the Wadden Sea, the stairwell is not provided with windows. Only at the top of the balcony is the Wadden Sea visible.

At the entrance of the tower is a bronze relief of visual artist Hildo Krop placed. On this there are three bricklayers placing basalt blocks and the text: "A people who live builds on his future."

The lookout tower was restored in 2006-2007. 52° 58′ 8″ NB, 5° 6′ 32″ OL
