Walcherse costume

The Walcherse costume is a well-known region in Zeeland, which is only worn on the island of Walcheren. Because Walcheren is the most famous and varied island of Zeeland, Zeeuwse costume is soon considered Walcherse dracht, but it differs strongly from that of the other Zeeland Islands. This gesture is barely worn, once again, a standstill is encountered in a retirement home. Especially after World War II, the Walcherse costume disappeared at a rapid pace, as it became known on the isolated island of Walcheren with American culture. With a census in 2003, 157 women and no man appeared to wear the costume daily. The youngest bearer was 69 years old. Women's clothing Girls in Walcherse costume

The worship of a woman consists of many parts. One wears an old-fashioned underwear, over it's so-called "jacket": a deep black sweater of merino wool, with a cut-out for the decolleté. Among them is the "beech", which is also worn by the South Communist costume. About these two parts is a crocheted cloth in a triangular shape that attaches to a few pins. For the waist, one is wearing an underwear and wearing a skirt of cotton, also called a "apron", with a well-known gray-white striped motif with black figures. On important days or events, a black skirt of merino wool is used instead of the cotton skirt. At the head, one blinks at the height of the hair, after which the hair is put on the back and wraps around the blister.

After that you put an entire golden bracket with gold curls on both sides at the front, protruding next to the forehead. These curls are called "stitching" on Sundays or public holidays. A stitch is a triangular ornament with a pearl in the middle. After that, one gets over the head a stitched side hat that is attached with pins. To do this, you have to make a hat made of other material, which is also attached with pins, after which it is a whole. In mourning, all the equipment is wearing only black components. On the neck, the woman wears a blood coral necklace, with a gold lock at the front. At the mourn this necklace consists of black garnet jewels. Men's clothes

The manpower of Walcheren is generally the same, with his deep black felt fabric, and his waistcoats. Around the neck there is a tight cloth with two "Zeeuwse knopen", which consist entirely of gold. Below are the men and gold brooch. To wear the waist there are two silver pants. There are some black buttons on the shirt. On the head is wearing a round hat, which has a bow tie, but it is also a "beat" bag. In Westkapelle there is a small hat with a embroidered motif on the side. In some places on Walcheren you wear the cap, but without embroidery. In Westkapelle, the men wear the hat skewed, sometimes backwards, and there is also a story of it, but it is unknown if it is true. It would be that when a child is born, the grandfather is coming and throwing the hat on top of a distance, and how it's going to end up, so does it last forever. The last man wearing the costume in the whole of Holland was Pieter Verhage, in the Walcherse costume.
