Warren "Baby" Dodds (New Orleans, December 24, 1898 - Chicago, February 14, 1959) was a leading early jazz drummer and one of the first drummers whose music was recorded.
"Baby" Dodds (pronounced "dots") was the younger brother of clarinettist Johnny Dodds. He is considered one of the best jazz drummers of the pre-big band period, and one of the most important early jazz drummers. Dodds was one of the first drummers to improvise during recordings. He varied his drum patterns with accents and embellishments, and he gave the beat with the bass drum while performing 'buzz rolls' on the snare drum. Some of his early influences include Louis Cottrell Sr., Harry Zeno, Henry Martin and Tubby Hall.
Musicians and bands with which Baby Dodds played included King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band (from 1922), Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and he can also be heard on records with his brother Johnny Dodds in the 20s and 30s.
