Dick Cuthell

Richard 'Dick' Cuthell is a British musician, composer, producer and arranger. Although he controls several instruments, he plays mostly trumpet. Cuthell is famous for his huge mustache and his collaborations with Jamaican trombonist Rico Rodriguez and the bands of the 2 Tone label. biography

In the 1960s, Cuthell played in various bands (including the Washington Soul Band) and worked at Island Records as a technician and (later) producer in the 1970s. By staying in Jamaica for some time, he came into contact with ska and reggae; so he contributed to the exodus of Bob Marley and Garvey's Ghost, one of the many Marcus Garvey records Burning Spear released.

Together with Rico Rodriguez, Cuthell formed the live-blazers section of The Specials between 1979 and 1981 and also worked with the spin-offs Fun Boy Three and Special AKA. For the latter, he wrote the double-sex Racist Friend / Bright Lights (predecessor of the world-famous Free Nelson Mandela).

Furthermore, Cuthell has torn with Madness and the Eurythmics, and he contributed to Linton Kwesi Johnson, XTC, The Pogues, and The Boothill Foot Tappers records.

In 1988 Cuthell was asked for the event band that had set up the bankrupt Specials- / 2 Tone brain Jerry Dammers for the Nelson Mandela 70th anniversary. Then he (more or less) retired from the music world and became a taxi driver. But the blood cropped where it was not possible and in 2004 he recorded a CD with Playgroup. By the end of 2010, Cuthell was a special guest at Rico Rodriguez's band.
